 LYMPH  NODE  EXAMINATION

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
·         Lymphatic system is a closed system of channels called lymph channels or lymph vessels. It is the one way system and the lymph flows through this from tissue system towards blood.
Lymph
·         Lymph is a transudate from blood & contains the same proteins as in plasma but in smaller amounts.
·         It mainly consists of lymphocytes.
Lymphatic vessels
·         Lymphatic vessel includes lymph capillaries & larger lymph vessels.
Lymph capillaries are similar to blood capillaries, but adapted to have much greater permeability.
they are found in most tissues of the body, except avascular tissues like cornea, hair, nails etc.
Larger lymph vessels
·         They have structure similar to that of veins.
·         Lymph capillaries join together to form large lymph vessels.
·         THORACIC DUCT is the largest lymph vessel in the body.
Lymph nodes
·         They are bean shaped organs found in clusters along the lymphatic channels of the body.
·         They are mainly composed of lymphoid tissue.
Structure of lymph node
·         Lymph node consists of a connective tissue framework, with numerous lymphocytes and other cells fill the interstices of the network.
·         Lymph node is surrounded by a capsule made of collagen fibres. Numerous septa run into the node from the capsule and divide it into lobules.

                       INTRODUCTION
The systemic administration of various drugs and chemicals frequently evokes an oral and body reaction which is not on the basis of an allergy or sensitivity. The reaction is often a part of a generalized epidermal reaction, but other times it occurs as a specific phenomenon apparently due to the anatomical peculiarities of the oral cavity
DEFINITION
Pigmentation which arises as a result of introduction of metals or drugs into the body via mucous membrane, intestinal tract and skin.

CLASSIFICATION
1.    ACCIDENTAL PIGMENTATIION   :   Accidental implantation of material in
                                                            the gingival tissue.
2.    IATROGENIC PIGMENTATION     :   Due to dental procedure
3.    HEAVY METAL PIGMENTATION  :   Due to ingestion of metals like bismuth,
lead , mercury in the body.

INTRODUCTION TO ORAL CANCER

TUMOR
—   By definition is an abnormal mass of tissue, growth  of which exceeds and is uncoordinated  with that of normal tissues and persists in the same excessive manner, after  the cessation of the stimuli that evokes the changes.
—  Tumor can either be benign & malignant.
—  Benign tumors are NOT CANCER……..
—  Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening.
—  Generally, benign tumors can be removed, and they usually do not grow back.
— do not invade the tissues around them. and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant  tumors  may be life-threatening

  INTRODUCTION

Virus is a Latin word which means venom or poison. The size of the viruses varies in millimicrons. It consist of central core of DNA or RNA.Virally infected cells produce the same type of nucleic acid so susceptibility of cells infection may be increased. Viruses cause certain infectious diseases and produce long-lasting immunity against reinfection by the same virus.
In addition , there are many neoplasm can be caused due to the viral infection. The classification of virus is difficult because of size of viruses and their incompletely understood metabolic systems. However, their classification based on biologic, chemical and physical properties of the animal viruses, separating them into groups according to the type of nucleic acid, and the size, shape and substructure of particle has been undertaken by the International Committee on Nomenclature of Viruses of the International Association of Microbiological Societies.

DENTAL CARIES:
It is an irreversible  progressive disease  of multifactorial  nature  affecting the calcified tissues of the teeth characterized by demineralization of inorganic portion  & destruction of organic portion of the tooth.

CARIES ACTIVITY:
Caries activity is a measure of speed of progression of a carious lesion.

CARIES SUSCEPTIBILITY:
Refers to the inherent  tendency of the host & the target tissue ,  the tooth to be affected by the carious process .
Caries activity test facilitates:
1.Need & extent of personalized preventive measures.
2.Serves as an index of success of the therapeutic measures.
3.Motivates & monitors the effectiveness of education programs relating to dietary & oral hygiene procedures.
4.Manages the progress of restorative procedures.
5.      Identify high risk groups & individuals.

INTRODUCTION

Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting the human race. In many ways   it can be considered a disease of modern times as the occurrence of caries seems to be much higher in the last few generations. It is said that once it occurs the scars persists throughout life even though the lesion is treated.
It affects persons of both sexes, in all races, all socioeconomic strata and in every age group, though some people may be more prone to it than others. Systemic complications such as, subacute bacterial endocarditis   have also been associated with dental caries.
Therefore it is mandatory for the clinician to understand the magnitude of this problem and the risk factors in the community to plan suitable preventive measures.
The word CARIES is derived from the Latin word meaning  rot or decay .

DEFINITION OF CARIES

DENTAL CARIES is an irreversible microbial disease affecting the hard tissues of the tooth causing demineralization of inorganic portion and destruction of organic portion which further leads to cavitations

THEORIES OF DENTAL CARIES
Many theories have evolved through years of investigation and observation for etiology of caries
