CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION
Orthodontics is that branch of
dentistry concerned with prevention, interception and correction of
malocclusion and other abnormalities
of the dento -facial region.
The name orthodontics comes from two Greek words:
“ orthos ” meaning correct
“

“ Orthodontics
includes the growth and development of the jaws and the face particularly, and
the body generally as influencing the position of the teeth; study of action
and reaction of internal and external influences on the development and the
prevention and correction of arrested and perverted development ”

- Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) :
Father of medical science

- Hippocrates (460-377 BC) :
Mention about ‘ crooked teeth ’
- Pierre
Fauchard :
Father of dentistry
- Year
1900 : Beginning of the oldest
specialty of dentistry
- Frenchman
LeFoulon (1839 ) : Term orthodontics was coined
- Pierre
Fauchard gave the first
comprehensive discussion of regulating teeth.

his treatise on dentistry Fauchard
discusses BANDELETTE.

H Angle (1855 – 1930 ) : Father
of Modern Orthodontics
- Norman
Kingsley an American dentist was the first to use extra-oral force to
correct protruding teeth.
- Emerson.c.Angell
(1823-1903) first advocated the opening of the mid-palatal suture a
procedure which later came to be known as rapid maxillary expansion.
- William.E.Magill(1823-1896)
was the first person to band teeth for active tooth movement
- Calvin
Case (1847-1923) believed that facial improvement was a guide to
orthodontic treatment.
